Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Newport Historical Society. Becoming a NHS volunteer is an excellent way to learn more about Newport’s history, to meet fellow history enthusiasts, and, most importantly, to contribute to the Society’s mission to preserve and teach about the history of Newport County. Volunteer opportunities exist to suit people with varying interests, skills, and availability.
Help execute special events and programs offered throughout the year, weekdays, weekends, and/or evenings under the supervision of NHS staff and Leadership Volunteers. Most Special Events Volunteers are trained on the day they volunteer; a long-term commitment is not required. Their duties can include the following:
- Preparing mailings
- Helping run events on the day of the event
- Making phone calls
- Distributing posters, flyers, and brochures throughout the community (this can help all year, not just before special events)
- Greeting and providing information
Volunteer weekdays on a regular basis assisting with curatorial, administrative, and educational functions. Openings are limited. Because lengthy training is usually required for these positions, we ask that key volunteers commit to at least 2 hours per week for 6 months or more.
