Rosemary Enright and Sue Maden, authors of the new book Jamestown: A History of Narragansett Bay’s Island Town (History Press 2010), the first comprehensive book about the island’s history since 1949, will offer an evening presentation on March 3, 2011 at 5:30pm at the Colony House on Washington Square.

Enright and Maden will discuss how Jamestown’s history has been shaped by its geography. Jamestown was part of the larger world when merchants and travelers used the common roadway of the bay. As the speed of transportation on land increased, that same bay isolated the town. Enright and Maden will share how the island developed into the community it is today.

Rosemary Enright has served as on officer on the board of directors for the Jamestown Historical Society since 2005. Rosemary has edited the society’s biennial newsletter since 2002, and she writes a monthly column for the Jamestown Press on historical society activities. Sue Maden contributes a weekly column of historical facts to the Jamestown Press. She has served several terms on the board of the Jamestown Historical Society. She is chair of the society’s collections committee, and also serves on the publications committee of the Newport Historical Society. Both Enright and Maden are authors of several books and monographs on Jamestown and Rhode Island history.

A book signing will follow the presentation. Jamestown: A History of Narragansett Bay’s Island Town will be available for purchase for $21.99 plus tax. Admission costs $5 per person, $1 for Newport Historical Society members. Reservations requested. Persons with mobility issues should call in advance. 401-841-8770
