Historic resources just got a little easier to locate. Newport Historical Society’s collections can now be accessed online. As collections are inventoried, processed, and cataloged, they will become available online via the NHS Online Catalog and manuscript collections will also appear on the state-wide archival gateway, RIAMCO.
Since December 2011, NHS has been making collections accessible online via this online catalog. Users are able to search for holdings using keywords, and advanced searches for specific attributes. As of February, users can now find Manuscript Collections on line, as archival documents are inventoried, processed, and cataloged. The record display includes the scope and general content of each archival collection, a historical or biographical note, and subject terms.
NHS is also excited to announce their inclusion in the Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections Online, RIAMCO. RIAMCO is a gateway that provides access to archival and manuscript collections throughout Rhode Island. Researchers can locate collections relating to their research at twelve Rhode Island repositories through one comprehensive website, streamlining their research process. The finding aids posted at RIAMCO are encoded in XML according to the de facto industry standard, Encoded Archival Description, EAD. EAD enables an archivist to embed information in the finding aid enhancing the discoverability of these primary sources. EAD creates machine-readable data making it easy to search, maintain, and share data across repositories. Here is a link to a finding aid on RIAMCO: http://j.mp/zLTCuk
